    So which one is better?

    The most accurate answer is:

    Recent OECD data show that all three approaches now coexist in adult learning. Across participating OECD countries, 53% of non-formal adult learning was delivered face-to-face, 34% online, and 14% through blended formats in the 2023 Survey of Adult Skills.

    The important question, therefore, is not:

Importantly, the authors emphasized that the advantage appeared to come from instructional design rather than technology itself.

    Another meta-analysis covering 133 studies and 18,464 participants found positive effects of blended learning on learning performance, but the results varied depending on factors such as teaching methods, online interaction, and the proportion of learning conducted online.

    That variation is important.

    It tells us that asking:

    “Does hybrid learning work?”

    may be too broad.

    A better question is:

    “What happens during the online portion, what happens in person, and why was each activity placed there?”

    Where Online Learning Has an Advantage

    1. Flexibility

    Perhaps the clearest strength of online learning is that learners do not always have to be in the same place at the same time.

    A working professional might study:

    • before work;

    • during a lunch break;

    • in the evening;

    • on weekends.

    Instead of choosing based on preference, use this simple framework.

    Mostly knowledge and digital practice?

    Online can work very well.

    Physical or sensory skill?

    Include in-person supervised practice.

    Learners need flexibility but also substantial feedback?

    Consider hybrid.

    Learners are geographically dispersed?

    Favor online components.

    Networking and interpersonal interaction are major objectives?

    Include synchronous or in-person interaction.

    Learners struggle with independent learning?
